Wood and Salt Fired

Wood firing happens in a walk-in kiln built out of brick and mortar. Because of the extremely high temperatures (up to 2400), the kilns are built and used outdoors. The firing process takes up to 24 hours and requires constant stoking around the clock.  This reduction (starving oxygen) process causes a volatile atmosphere. Raging fire and blasts of ash and/or salt hit the pottery inside.  Glazes can have Celedon finishes, crackling, and can form crystallization.  Clay that isn't glazed will show flashing and orange peel textures and clay color becomes a light to dark toasted marshmallow.
